The most common boiler faults
Low pressure is a common cause of boiler lockouts. It's usually caused by a leak on the system, a faulty pressure relief valve or a failing expansion vessel. Topping it up is a short-term fix; finding the cause is the real repair.
Ignition faults, where the boiler tries to light and fails, can come from gas supply issues, a failed ignition electrode, a blocked condensate trap or a faulty gas valve. Fan and pump failures cause overheating lockouts and poor circulation.
Diverter valve faults on combi boilers cause the classic 'heating works but no hot water' (or the reverse) problem. Thermistors and sensors cause erratic temperatures.
Repair or replace?
We'll give you a straight answer. If your boiler is reasonably young and the fault is a single component, a repair almost always makes sense. If it's old, repairs are becoming frequent, parts are no longer available or it has been flagged unsafe, a replacement may be better value, and many new boilers come with warranties of up to 10 years. We won't push you either way.
